Letter To Grandma

LI: To vary our sentence lengths to create pace and impact .

For our writing task this week, my partners and I created a DLO based on the book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. We wrote a letter from Bruno to his Grandmother to show how much he hates his new house at ‘Out-With’ (Auschwitz). In the letter, Bruno explains how much he misses the “warmth” and “light” of his old life in Berlin compared to the gray, gloomy atmosphere of the new house. He also shares his confusion about the thin, tired-looking men in striped clothes he sees from his window and how much he longs to see his Grandmother again.

Johnny Pohe and The Great Escape

LI: To make an informed opinion

Our task was to create a DLO that captures the dual perspectives of this era. Our group specifically analyzed the immense risks Johnny Pohe took, debating whether his loyalty to the Crown was a way to uphold his mana or if he felt the weight of representing a nation that hadn’t always honored its Treaty promises to his people, questioning whether the risks he took were motivated by a sense of global duty or a desire to prove that Māori were equal partners in the defense of Aotearoa.

Something I found interesting was how the paternership promised in the Treaty was reflected in Johnny Pohe’s life. Despite the broken promises of the past, he fought as an equal partner on the world stage, showing the kind of leadership and mana that the Treaty was meant to protect because he was demonstrating the very equality and partnership that the Treaty of Waitangi promised, proving on a global stage that Māori leadership was second to none.

The Lady who said ‘ Kia Ora ‘

LI: To summarise a text

We read about Dame Naida Glavish, a wahine toia who choice to greet callers with “Kia Ora” instead of “Hello.” Her one action led to a massive change in New Zealand’s cultural identity. We learned about Dame Naida Glavish, a wahina toa whose defiant choice to greet callers with ‘Kia Ora ‘ instead of ‘Hello’ sparked a national movement. This singular act of cultural reclamation didn’t just challenge a workplace policy; it fundamentally shifted New Zealand’s cultural identity and paved the way for the revitalisation of Te Reo Māori in everyday life

We think Dame Naida Glavish was an agent of change because n our view, Dame Naida Glavish acted as an agent of change because she risked her livelihood for her heritage. By standing her ground , she demonstrated that a single, consistent act of cultural pride can dismantle systemic prejudice.

First Flight in the Obsidian Night

LI: To write a narrative from the point of view of a baby owl on its first flight

Shadows stretched across the horizon as the air turned crisp and biting against my downy feathers. A sudden, powerful gust of wind shoved against my back, forcing me to sink my sharp talons deeper into the rough, fibrous bark of the ancient branch. All around me, the forest danced wildly, with silver leaves tossing and turning in the arctic breeze. I widened my binocular eyes, scanning the obsidian darkness for any sign of movement. High above, the haunting whistles of the elder owls echoed through the trees, beckoning me to join their dance. My wings felt like lead weights, and a shiver of trepidation rippled through my small, compact body, nearly drowning out my dreams of flight.

Tonight was the night I would fly for the first time, or is it?

Suddenly, the safety of my sturdy branch vanished as a violent gale screamed through the canopy. The ancient wood groaned under my weight, and a sharp crack echoed through the silent woods. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. As the fibrous bark slipped from my talons, leaving me tumbling into the empty, cold air. I was no longer a spectator of the night and I was going to fall headfirst into the unknown below me. The sensation of the wind brushed against my ears as I was falling.

At that very moment while I was falling, my vision became a blur and I could see leaves swooping at me. Whilst my pending doom, my instincts collided with my fear. I fought with the urge to unfurl my wings against the strong wind. The air bellowed with roars in my ears and for a heart stop second, I felt a gust of wind against my wings. I was spinning out of control, desperate to find a way to turn this deadly fall into a graceful flight.

When I felt the dense wind, almost a flicker of desire came to me. I overcame my fears and chose to flap my trembling wings in a desperate need of help. I felt freedom and celebrated in triumph. Looking back at my branch, I learnt that my instincts were stronger than my fear, and the sky was exactly where I was meant to be.

Mrs Anderson read us the book ‘First Flight’ by June Crebbin. We talked about the narrators point of view and used a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what the story might look like when told in the first person. In this activity we collaborated ideas to make a good narrative that is interesting and is captavating to people that are interested in Owl stories .

I enjoyed using the Gem because it helped me understand more of our activity and mape us think more thoroughly about the story and how it might look when in first person ( when a story is told by a character inside it, using pronouns like “I,” “me,” “my,” and “we” )

Life in the Annex

LI: To write a description of life with the Frank family in the annex in 1942

The Annex was silent except for the creaking old wooden floors, the loud shouting and yelling at the doors of us w Jewish from the raids,  the loud breathing of the others and the chiming of the ticking clock outside.

It also reeked of the smell of not showering for days. When we got the yuck soup we got every single night my hands shook and the metal spoon clattered against my bowl of soup . Some nights our stomach will rumble because of hunger and lack of food then other nights we would have to eat horrible food like beans, soup packets or vegetables which were bland and very basic whilst leading to a commotion with everyone but most were grateful for at least having a meal.

Most days it was quiet but some days all you could hear was people gossiping or screams , as my heart was starting to race and it was beating overly fast and I started to worry that the Germans would be able to hear my heart beat. For our bathroom situation we could use the toilet but we couldn’t flush the toilet due to the sound and we were afraid to get found, we do have windows but we had to block them as well so that the Nazis don’t find us.

Being cramped in a small space would be boring so for entertainment we would spy on our neighbors and on other people around us .  Another girl named Anne Frank recorded everything down in her diary as her entertainment . All we could do was small movements which we had to be cautious of our movements.

My head was racing with any small quiet sound made, I sigh out of relief as I hear the Germans drive past our home but even after that I still felt that tight knot twirling in my throat. I was never ever fully calm. As we ate, I was too scared to even slurp too loud. I could hear the sounds of Anne scribbling on her diary and the crisp sound of the  pages flipping throughout the minutes, I could hear the desperate pleas of our neighbours that got taken away, I prayed to god for the Germans to have mercy on us. And I could also hear the haunting gunshots that were fired at the Jews for trying to get any source of food for their families, I could also hear screams of the Jews that tried getting food and supplies for their family.

At night I couldn’t sleep even if I was tired .I was to shocken to fall asleep as the night screams terrified me more as we started to think it was our time to come.

This week for our Writing our main focus was about Anne Frank . Our task was to imagine that we were there in the annex (hiding spot ) with her and the Frank family for a discription . Mrs Anderson created Gemini Gem to drop us hints on what we should say whilst Gemini Gem helps us make it stand out more and is very precised with our words . Thanks to the help of Gemini with our Wirting task .

The Movies

The Movies with my family.

This holiday on Wednesday ,I went with my family to the Sylvia Park movies to watch Snow white.

First my family and I woke up and got ready. When we finished we left in the car.

My mum Jessica first drove to the panmure shops to get some food so that she didn’t have to pay for the cinema food except for drinks and popcorn. Next when  we arrived my mum Jess bought it .

The popcorn was 5.99$ and drinks were 7.83$ . After That my mum led us to the movie theater and we sat down.

The movie was starting and I started to eat some skittles and ice cream for the shop’s . As the old witch gave the apple in the movie I was just eating popcorn, slushie, chips and a cupcake.

Later the movie ended and we drove to mc donalds for dinner then went back home and slept.

Llamas

This week we are learning about llamas and getting information and retell it in less words. This activity is used for reading which was super fun because we learnt different ways of learning and learning about animals is fun. First we had to write in our books about Llamas. After that, I went on Google drive and made a Google drawing, When we were finished I decorated it to be fabulous and creative. Then I made a Google slide ( also from Google drive) about the products used from Llamas hair. I added pictures and put it in remove BIG which is a website that removes the background. Then, I did the information and font to decorate. This experience was fun and I felt joyful and I enjoyed doing this activity. Finally I embed the code and blogged it. Hope you like it.

Foxy the Fox

One day deep in the forest was a fox named Foxy he loved to play on his swing out on the maple tree outside. He would play on it everyday until night but then a bear came along and took the swing. Foxy was very upset that his favorite thing was broken but then he started to like climbing trees.

His favorite kind of tree is maple tree because they remind him of his  swing. As Foxy was climbing a tree he saw a frog looking lonely so Foxy climbed down and asked what was the frog’s name he said his name was Hoppy. Hoppy asked Foxy if he wants to come over for dinner Foxy asked to see his house he turn to the lake and said there Foxy told Hoppy that he not very good at staying underwater so it would be better at his house Hoppy agreed Foxy told Hoppy to stay there because he need to ask his mum first.

He ran to his house and asked his mum if a friend could stay for dinner she said yes and Foxy ran back to the lake and told the Hoppy to be back here at five pm so he could meet here Hoppy said yup and hopped in the lake Foxy started to climbed some trees in the meanwhile. After quite some time it was five pm. Foxy ran to the lake and saw a Hoppy waiting by a lilypad.

Foxy waved his hand and told  Foxy that this is his favorite lilypad. Hoppy was about to tell Foxy all about it but Foxy was in a hurry so he grabbed Hoppy’s arm and ran to his tree house. Hoppy thanked Foxy for letting him come over for dinner. Foxy said it was his treat.

Hoppy sat down on a seat Foxy went on a chair next to him Foxy mom came out of the kitchen with a big plate of pasta Hoppy   was so happy because pasta is his favorite food. Hoppy was using his hands to pick up the pasta because under the lake they don’t use spoons and forks Foxy did not mind it. Hoppy told Foxy that a bear took his seesaw after dinner they want revenge so they got all the animals the bear took stuff from and when to the bear house they knocked on the door ready to put the bear in his place out came the bear and the animals said if he did not give their stuff back then they will tear down his house the bear said sorry he open the door and they saw and big indoor park
